This guide will cover:

Why do we have a placement test?

Our placement test helps us estimate your ability in a language, and this information lets us serve you with learning material that is appropriate for your level.

We use a multiple-choice listening comprehension test: You will hear an audio recording in your target language and then be prompted to choose the correct translation from a list of possible translations.

To get the most accurate results, you should know that

  • Our test is on the honor system; cheating or guessing could cause you to miss out on several thousand useful learning items

  • Most people can understand better than they can speak, but you should only mark an answer as correct if it's something you're confident you could spontaneously express in a real conversation

  • Our test tends to place people above their actual level; if you're on the fence with a question, select "start from this level" instead of guessing

  • Our A1 content is actually relatively difficult, grammar-wise; you'll probably encounter some new stuff there even if you've already worked through a beginner textbook.

With that in mind, you can access the placement test in one of two ways

When adding a new Glossika course

After adding a new Glossika course, you'll be asked if you're already familiar with the language or not.

  • If you're familiar with the language, you'll be asked to take a placement test

  • If you're a total beginner, we'll start you off from zero

If you think your Glossika course is too hard or easy:

If you start training and feel that the sentences Glossika is offering are too hard or too easy, you can retake the test at any time by selecting "re-test" from your home dashboard. This will let you adjust your level up or down accordingly.

(Don't worry — this will change your level, but your existing progress and rep count will not be affected.)

You should now see a page like this. Progress through the test as you can, then click "Start from this level" to end the test and continue training with content of similar difficulty.

Are sentences too easy or too hard? Here’s how to adjust the language level of sentences in Glossika.

1. You may access the re-test option from the "Levels" section of your "Course" page. If the outcome of your previous test was too high, you can return to a lower level within "Levels" without taking the placement test again.

2. Progress through the test and then click “Start from this level” once you reach your desired difficulty
